Winter Bucket List

Winter Bucket List

Yes, December has definitely snuck up on me. You too?

While we have been trying not to rush and dive head first into all things holiday, we didn’t really have a choice this weekend. We couldn’t find our holiday decorations, Advent calendar, our tree stand or Christmas tree ornaments. After searching through our storage unit, we realized we stored them somewhere else – at my in-laws house in New Jersey. OOPS. As a result, there was no rushing around this weekend to buy a tree and decorate it.

That’s the thing – this holiday season and this winter, I don’t really want to rush around. I want to enjoy it and have fun as well as to make sure that we don’t miss out on those special moments that come along with the season. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been compiling a winter bucket list in my head.

Winter bucket list 2012

At the top of my list is skiing. I missed last year’s ski season because of my knee injury and impending surgery and I really really really want to ski this year. I should be fine to ski – in fact, that was a major factor in my decision to have knee surgery relatively soon after becoming injured because I knew that I would need close to a year of rehab before getting back on the mountain. I’m also looking forward to Jasper returning to ski school and Everett taking his first official ski lesson.

Many of the other items on my winter bucket list are more about savoring the season and making memories with my kids, like make snow angels with them instead of just taking pictures and watching from the sidelines.

I have a few more ideas on my Winter Bucket List Pinterest board and will be adding more in the coming weeks.

What’s on your winter bucket list?

Hey you, remember me? Yeah…I know…I disappeared off the face of the earth. Sigh.

LOVE your winter bucket list…reminds me of all the things I love to do with the kids. However, would you believe I lived in MA & CT for a total of 7 years and never once went skiing (or ice skating)? Nope. Never. Crazy, I know, and I plan to one day try it out.

I promise I’ll be keeping in touch more. Promise. <3

Funny because I meant to respond to this…a week ago! I’ve disappeared too so please don’t apologize. Life’s busy, especially this time of year. I miss my blog friends. I can’t believe you never went skiing or ice skating! Skiing I can understand because it’s a bit more involved but ice skating? You have to try it.

Great idea! I need to start a winter bucket list otherwise the time flies by and I wish we would have gone sledding, skating, snowboarding, winter hiking, etc more. I’m 90% sure we are getting the kids out on the slopes this year. Or at least an attempt. :) *deep breath* I can do this!

I was so worried about getting the kids on skis but I realized that I just needed to let go a little bit and just let them play around and have fun. I hope you do it. It’s pretty much the most adorable thing to see your little kids on skis.

I forget that not everyone gets snow during the winter. I just take it for granted! I hope that you get a chance to ski again soon.

It cracks me up tos ee all the ski and snow related things on your list. I ran in a tank top and skirt this weekend in 75 degree weather lol!
I love making Christmas cookies! I go baking crazy at Christmas!

You’ve inspired me…again. I love to downhill ski. My husband isn’t much for it but I would love for the kids to learn. I know Nick is a little young, but Callia would love it. I really have to look into that this year!

You should do it! Ed’s not a big skier either so I kind of feel like I need the kids on my side in order to justify trips to the mountains in the winter. Callia would love it!

Thanks Ericka! Took that photo in Lake Tahoe last year, I think? You’re right that there are so many things to do and I definitely wanted to keep track and remember to have fun this winter.

Thanks Krysten! I’m excited about checking off things from our winter bucket list. Otherwise, I have a feeling that the months would pass by way too quickly!

haha. Part of the reason I started making this list was so that I had some things to do with the kids while they were on vacation!

I have a “Clean it Up” list for December! This list is comprised of all the things I need to do that I have put off day after day (clean the garage, insulate attic, get windshield fixed; you know, all those FUN things). These things build up and occupy the dark corners of my psyche in a way that doesn’t feel good and I want them out of my head for the New Year.

However, one of my things to do this month is to enjoy Christmas. I usually work, work, work and end up missing out on the festivity of the season. Your list is a reminder of that. Thanks.

Oh man, I have many of those “fun things” piling up and that are weighing on my psyche too. Maybe I’ll have to make a Clean it Up list too! I love that one of the things you’re focusing on this month is enjoying Christmas. I tend to do the same – work and rush right on through the holidays, trying to get through them rather than really enjoying them.

Good idea! Skiing for me too!!!! I love to ski and my husband and I have already resolved that we’ll be hitting the slopes this winter. I’ll be making gingerbread houses with my students, it’s my first time, hope it works!

It’s true – the neighborhoods that go all out with the Christmas lights are amazing. I’ll have to add that to my list too!

I was feeling a little scroogie so decided to make this list to help me focus on what made me happy and excited about this time of year.

What a great idea! A bucket list pinterest board.

I have to admit…I don’t like the cold so much so I might take some time off from cardio and focus on building some muscle. My kids are grown, 21 and 17 yo at home, and they don’t like the cold anymore than I do. Hmmmm….wonder where they get it. So I’ll be doing a lot of baking with my youngest because we love to cook. Perhaps some winter recipes are in order.

The colder weather definitely makes me want to bake and cook soups and stews and other warm, hearty meals. It’s funny but I actually don’t really care for the cold either. Hate it typically especially all the muck involved when you live in NYC and have to walk everywhere. However, I will put up with pretty crappy conditions in order to ski :-)

What a great list! It is hard for me to imagine the snow (loved the pic though!). One day I will come to New York and have a cold Christmas! Then I can do some bucket list things with you! It is really hotting up over here – today on about 30 degrees celcius and I went surfing in my shorty wetsuit. The water was clear & warm and the dolphins came out to play. It will only get hotter from here on in, esp in Jan and Feb. Enjoy all your activities, Bron :)

I would love for you to visit NYC! Enjoy your surf sessions and surf some for me please. My husband is headed your way for a very brief work trip and I was trying to convince him to go out for a surf while he’s there.

      • Bron says

Tell him to get out in the water, he won’t regret it! Find a local surf school and hire a board or have a lesson. Or make it a team building activity with work mates! Everybody wins! B :)

Great list. I especially like the snow angels one! Very excited that you get to ski again if that is one of your favorite things to do–it’s a great family activity. I am such a summer person, and not a winter person at all, but i need to change my attitude and embrace it–thanks for the reminder!

Aside from skiing, I really am not a huge fan of the winter and cold. I guess this is my attempt to embrace it or at least to remember to have fun with the boys since they love the snow so much. With the snow angels. I’m determined to get down there and made some too instead of just taking pictures of the kids.

I just found your blog through HappyFitMama. I love your winter bucket list. Also on mine is running in freshly fallen snow. I did a lot of that last December. Early morning runs that started out with a headlamp and me crunching through the snow. BTW when you run in the snow with a headlamp the snowflakes look like little lasers flying past your face. Random. But cool. Running in the snow makes me feel like I’m in a Robert Frost poem. So quiet. Peacful. Perfect.

Hi Sarah! So happy to have you visit here. I love love love the quiet of running in freshly fallen snow. And the crunch! Definitely feels like you’re in a Robert Frost poem – what a perfect way to describe it.

Really? Totally get it. Actually, if I didn’t learn to ski as a kid, I’m not sure I would do it as an adult. But it is super fun :-)

We just got a foot of powder over here. Every year, I tell myself I am going to try to go ski; I never actually have yet! My husband’s a snow bunny and wants to go every year. I went tubing at Big Bear last year…maybe I should finally rent some skis this season! If the budget allows, I think I will! :)

Yes! Rent some skis and give it a try if you can. It’s super fun. I’ve actually never been tubing so maybe I’ll give that a try this year :-)
