Scenes from my weekend: Summer Solstice

Happy Monday! This past weekend marked the Summer Solstice and now, it’s officially summer!

I had a jam-packed weekend. What better way to share it with you then with some photos?

Saturday was the Summer Solstice. For the 12th year, thousands of yogis gathered in Times Square to practice yoga and find Mind Over Madness in Times Square. I was invited by Athleta to attend the Power Yoga session led by Bethany Lyons of Lyons Den Power Yoga in Tribeca.

Bethany is a classically trained ballet dancer-turned yogi and bears an uncanny resemblance to Brittany Spears circa 2003. Maybe it was just the braided hair and headpiece that did it but she led us through a great fiery class.

I have to admit – there is something that I love about practicing yoga in the middle of Times Square. It’s definitely challenging to try to tune out all the noise and distraction but at the same time, those noises become the soundtrack of your practice. And it’s hard to find your drishti amidst all the commotion around you!

After class, I headed off to a yoga workshop with Tiffany Cruikshank. You may recall that I took Tiffany’s workshop at the Yoga Journal Live! Conference in New York back in April. I love the way she teaches and I was excited to take another class with her. This class focused on the core and left me really appreciating all the layers of muscles that make up our core and how to better turn on (and off) those muscles.

On Sunday, I took over BonBonBreak’s Instagram Feed as part of its BonBon Break Behind the Scenes‘s series. I shared a look at my day – a fairly typical Sunday.

We were supposed to share a selfie for our first photo. I wanted to post a picture of my family but of course, the only decent picture of the four of us is from back in the Fall! Need to work on that.

I taught two yoga classes on Sunday morning at a studio in Brooklyn which I love. There’s nothing quite like teaching to a full class of people who are ready to practice (and sweat).

My first class focused largely on finding your midline as well as being mindful of your core – clearly influenced by Saturday’s workshops. My second class focused more on twisting postures which are great for detoxing by moving around the toxins that may have accumulated in your body. We used both physical postures which creates compression on the abdomen as well as breath practice to help facilitate this.

After I got home from the studio, I took a quick trip over to the local farmers market. We’re lucky that we have some great farmers markets nearby. My favorite thing right now – local strawberries. I may have also purchased a mini apple pie (they sold out of strawberry rhubarb, my first choice).

I worked for a few hours (I have a report due to a client today, yikes!) but needed to get outside and the boys needed to burn off some energy. We headed to the playground to play freeze tag. We also went back to the farmers market to pick up some veggies that I had forgotten to purchase earlier (maybe because I was too focused on the pie).

Jasper lost his 8th tooth last night. I was helping him floss his teeth when his tooth came flying out of his mouth and across the bathroom. It scared the crap out of me. So far, he’s lost a tooth while eating an apple, eating a hot dog, brushing his teeth and flossing. I wonder how he’ll lose the next one!

Sunday nights I try my best to prepare for the week. That means pulling out the planner and colored pens to help me keep track of my appointments, deadlines, yoga teaching, my half marathon training schedule, and the kids’ appointments/lessons/practices. Yes, despite all the gadgets out there, I prefer pen and paper.

I use a method called the Bullet Journal, adapted to my needs. It really does help me keep track of everything in one place. Would you be interested in hearing more? Maybe I’ll write a post about it?

Nighttime is also the time that I tend to get my work done except I AM trying to change that and go to be and wake up earlier. Yeah, not so much last night.

How was your weekend? Any bets on how Jasper’s going to lose his next tooth?

Wow girl! That was a jam-packed weekend! I really can’t wait to get back to my Sunday morning yoga class but it’s going to take me another week to get there. I loved seeing your Instagram feed this weekend with yoga in Times Square!!! Very, very cool. I also love the Farmer’s Markets around here but, alas I was not able to get to those either this weekend. I did manage to get my tattoo though :-))))

How exciting to practice in Time Square! Yes, I’d love to hear about bullet journal – I use both Google calendar for client appts & reminders & a paper & pen planner to keep track of to-dos.

    I love all the pictures!!
I’m glad you said the family picture was from the fall – I was wondering if it was cool enough for jackets/long sleeves?
I used to be very set on my pen and paper planner/notes. At the beginning of this year I switched over to an app and now I love it!! I like that my husband gets everything I put in without me having to send him anything!!! And, it is so easy to pull my phone out at the Drs office or wherever to schedule something else.

Wow lady! That’s a lot of yoga in one weekend. I loved seeing the pictures of Yoga in Time Square. I wanted to go to the Athleta here but E’s t-ball conflicted.

I use levenger and I think it’s called the “action method” to get every out of my head and on top paper first thing every day. I always feel better knowing exactly what lies ahead.

Loved watching you on Bon Bon Break! We sorta missed the solstice this year amidst a cloudy day full of ballet class and birthday parties. But I plan on celebrating all summer long :) Love that photo of your two out and playing!
