Scenes from my weekend – Music

I love New York City in the summer. Yes, it can be hot and humid and gross, especially if you have to commute by subway day in and day out, but there are so many things going on from outdoor concerts and movies to farmers markets in full swing to free outdoor fitness classes. The city also seems to quiet down since many New Yorkers leave town. It almost feels empty at times. One of the best things about living in Brooklyn is the Celebrate Brooklyn! concert series in Prospect Park. It brings together an amazing line-up of well-known and up-and-coming performers for free concerts throughout the summer. In all our years of living here, incredibly, Ed and I have never attended a Celebrate Brooklyn event. We’ve watched and listened from outside of the fence surrounding the event space but we’ve never actually been inside the fence. On Friday, we finally stepped inside. They’ve created this cool, laid-back vibe in the middle of Prospect Park, kind of like you are at a music festival somewhere out in the woods and not in the middle of Brooklyn. We went to see the Head and the Heart, a great band from Seattle. I first saw the band back in March and couldn’t wait to see them again. It felt good to have an adult evening.

Weekly Chasetime! My goals for last week were to complete Week 1 of the JCORE and clean up my eating habits. Today is Day 9 of the 40 day program and I have to tell you, those 20 minute workouts are intense. It’s not so much that the exercises themselves are hard per se but that they challenge your muscles to balance and stabilize your body which I believe is a lot harder than just pumping a lot of weights. I’m sore but in a I’ve-missed-feeling-this-sore kind of way. This week, I start a new set of JCORE workouts and I excited to see how the workouts progress and change.

The eating part…has been more challenging. I mentioned last week that I’m not good at sticking with a specific diet or meal plan. And I haven’t. I’m not good at keeping a food journal or configuring my meals to meet a specific allotment of protein, carbs, fats, fruits and veggies per meal. I try to pay attention and make sure that I’m staying within the general guidelines.

Lastly, this wasn’t in my goals for last week but I finally bit the bullet and set up a Facebook page for the blog. It’s been a long time coming. Now it’s up! It will be a place where I will share interesting tidbits, articles and workouts that I come across, keep you updated on ASP surf contests and be a place where we can have more conversation. Won’t you come over, take a look and like my page if you’re so inclined?

For this week, my goals include:

  1. Complete Week 2 of JCORE
  2. Continue to focus on improving my eating by being mindful, eating more vegetables and protein (i.e. don’t live on Chobani and granola alone), and drink more water. I realize that this is going to be an on-going process in order to change old habits.
I’m also doing some other housekeeping here on the blog and there might be some changes coming up this week. Stay tuned!

Did you have a good weekend? What tips do you have to help you eat clean? What do you like to see on Facebook pages? What kinds of things would you like to see on my Facebook page?

Well you look like you had a great weekend! Did you see my Friday night party I posted on IG? Glad you are liking Jcore. We are all sadist in longing for the next 2 days worth of muscle fatigue. I did get a good run and spin in on Saturday. Wanted to do the insane spartan wod on sunday, but I just needed to chill. and am now following you on FB my friend. Kudos for growing up. hee hee.

Totally saw you Friday night party on IG and LOVED it. Pretty much, that’s what I wanted to do. Isn’t it crazy how we long for the DOMS? Yes, growing up! I feel like I’m official now or something :-)

That sounds like so much fun! I do envy all that you New Yorkers have right at your feet on a constant basis. I think you’re doing great with your eating–you’re trying and that’s what counts.

I had a great weekend too–the husband and I got away w/o kids!

    • says

Thank you! I know that the effort counts and that’s what I keep trying to remind myself. Also that it’s not the end of the world if I don’t stick to the plan completely. I do need some flexibility and need to figure out what works for me. So glad to hear that you had a great weekend away without the kiddos!

I feel like you and I both jumped over hurdles this weekend. For me, it was that “first vlog” – and for you it was the FB page! I am so happy you are on FB! And I’m so glad that first video is behind me (but seriously, your encouragement got me out from behind the couch – so thanks!)

    • says

Yes! Loved that you vlogged. Don’t know why setting up a FB page felt like such a hurdle. Now I just have to figure out how to manage all these social media accounts :-)

I love New York! I used to work for L’Oreal and spent a good chuck of time there. It is be far my favorite city. Looks like you had such a fun and productive weekend. I will look for your FB page.. look forward to following. xoxo

Love that you have a FB page now!! And as for eating habits, it is hard to change them in one week, of course, give yourself some time and just do what you are doing, getting in tune with your habits and make whatever plan you follow to achieve this goal something that works for you, ya know? if it isn’t a particular plan or food logging or whatever, do what works for you. That is I think the key!

    • says

You’re so right – and something that I definitely realized – it is hard to change eating habits quickly. I think that it will work better for me to pay more attention to my body and my hunger and yes, it has to be a plan that works for me, not just something that’s written down in a book. I appreciate your words of encouragement!

If you need water reminders, I’m your girl! I harass one of my friends who used to HATE drinking water and it totally got her back on the water-drinking wagon! PS I love that you have an FB page now, woohoo! :-)

    • says

Yes please! Actually, I’m much better about the water these days since I’ve started using this Cambelbak water bottle. I don’t know why but I drink a lot more water and more frequently when I use it. Bizarro. I feel like I’m a big girl now with my FB page :-)

I loved the Brooklyn Concert series. I remember seeing Twyla Tharp’s dance company perform there. I’m like you in regards to eating habits. I try to keep a general balance, but just can’t be too detail oriented or I just throw my hands up and give up.

I can’t wait to see the changes that are going to happen here on your blog. And, I’m heading over to like your FB page now!

    • says

I love Twyla Tharp! She’s done some amazing choreography for NYC Ballet. With the eating, I think for me, unless it’s literally meals planned out for me every day, it’s hard for me to fudge it if it hasn’t very specific guidelines as to this many units of carbs vs. protein vs. etc. I think that I want and need to focus on generally cleaning things up and figuring out what works for me.

Yes! I’m nervous and excited about the changes that will happen here but I will definitely keep you posted as to how everything goes.

  8. says

Keep at it, sounds like you’re doing great! I think the JCore programs sounds awesome. Just focus on how much effort you’re putting into those workouts and know that eating clean will REALLY make those workouts count! :)

  9. says

    Just ‘liked’ your FB page!
I love to see people post their daily fitness plans (and challenges) as well as responses to interesting things they’ve happened upon on the internet or in the news! Looking forward to seeing your updates!

    • says

Thanks Tamara. That’s really helpful feedback. I think one of the reasons that I’ve put off creating a FB page was trying to figure out what I would post there!

  10. says

I’ve been doing more stabilizing/ balance stuff with my strength training–it’s more challenging and doesn’t pull tendons like too much weight does (my muscles can lift more than my skeletal system, apparently.) I’ve been challenging myself with interval running and trying to get faster–I’m so bad at HIIT stuff–total endurance. My body just hates sprinting!

    • says

I’ve realize that, especially as I’ve gotten older, the balance and stability work is so important! Intervals are HARD but really they are great for you especially if you want to get faster. I hate doing them but I feel better after I do them.

  11. says

OOOhhhh!!! I love it here!!! So pretty!!! It’s like buying a new car, right?! It’s all shiny and sparkly!!!

I am trying to pump myself with water too. I let myself slack over the past two weeks. I was sucking down some green tea like I would never be able to have it again.

    Congrats on the FB page!!

Great job on your goals for the week! I can’t wait to hear how JCORE continues to go for you. I liked your Facebook page! Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to live on Chobani and granola alone? :) That should be a food group all its own!

Thanks Christy for your support and for liking my FB page! I am all for lobbying for Chobani + granola to be a separate food group in the food pyramid! JCORE has been great so far.

Thanks Mandy! JCORE has been good so far. I love that it’s so quick and it definitely works up a sweat. Thanks for stopping by!
