oil pulling 101

Have you heard oil pulling? It seems like everywhere I turn, someone is talking about it.

You take a tablespoon or two of oil, place it in your mouth and then swish it around and “pull” it through your teeth for anywhere between five minutes to 20 minutes. According to the Internets, there are a lot of benefits of oil pulling from whiter teeth and healthier gums to improved heart health.

I was curious and tried it for a few days. I have terrible gums and figured that if it could help with that, I would be happy. The first time that I placed a spoonful of coconut oil in my mouth, I nearly gagged. I had to spit it out and take a smaller spoonful. The process was surprisingly soothing, although my jaw started to tire out fairly quickly. The 20 minutes passed by while I checked email and caught up on a few blogs. The after-taste in my mouth was surprisingly pleasant.

To be honest, I lasted about 3 days because 1) I never remembered to do it in the morning and 2) I never remembered to do it at night.

But I was curious about where the practice of oil pulling came from and if all the benefits were true. Luckily, Daily Burn asked me to write an article about that explains oil pulling – what it is, where it came from and the benefits.

I have read several posts about this recently and I was thinking it’s worth a try! Although I am terrible about remembering stuff like this…..I can barely get my flossing in so not sure I could keep it up! The benefits are pretty neat though.

I haven’t done it! Up until recently, I had terrible gums but they’re all healthy now! I wish I could tell you what my secret it, because I tried everything – turmeric, Ultimate Gum Solutions, Neem oil, tea tree oil, etc. The only thing that finally worked was going to the dentist for the first time in two years and having my gums deep cleaned! If I had known that would work..sigh.

I just started pulling. At first, I had a really hard time with it. It’s certainly not the most pleasant thing to do! But I have noticed that my teeth are whiter. In fact, others have noticed too. The hardest part is actually remembering to do it. That and trying to get it across to my kids that I can’t talk because I have oil in my mouth. 3 1/2 year olds don’t really get it. :)

I’m dying laughing about the reasons you quit. That would probably be the same for me! We HAVE coconut oil, but I’m not sure I can bring myself to put it in my mouth. It’s too much like Crisco!

Ok, call me what you will but this just seems crazy. IF it said it could improve the enamel on your teeth, I would be all over it. That is the one thing that I wish we had an answer too but I just don’t have the desire to add this to the daily regime.

Either way, I’m glad you tried it for me so I don’t have too. ;) Had you said it was life changing, I might have tried it. :)
