As the weather starts to turn cooler and the days get shorter, it’s harder and harder for me to leave the house to get to yoga class because let’s face it – it’s cold and dark and chances are, I don’t necessarily want to leave the house.
At times like this, I tend to rely more on my home yoga practice. I’m a big advocate of practicing yoga at home. I don’t believe that you always have to go to a studio to reap the benefits of a consistent yoga practice.
Admittedly, it can be hard to figure what exactly to do when you practice yoga at home. Even for me as a yoga instructor, there are times when I sit on my mat stumped and just want someone to lead me through a series of yoga poses.
Thankfully, that’s where Grokker comes in.
What is Grokker?
I recently had the opportunity to try Grokker. It offers high quality, expert-led videos in yoga, fitness and cooking, all produced by Grokker. The editorial team hand selects the experts who include YouTube stars like yoga instructor Kino MacGregor and Cassey Ho of Blogilates as well as teachers like Ashleigh Sergeant (global yoga trainer for adidas) and Jason Bowman. Currently there are more than 3,500 videos available and new videos released daily.
I focused on the yoga videos because, well, that’s what I love! There’s a huge selection of classes from vinyasa to ashtanga to restorative to Iyengar. Classes are also broken up in to type such as standing balances, hop opening, inversions, yoga for athletes, which lets you hone in on the specific type of class that you want to take if you aren’t familiar with the traditional categorization of yoga classes.
When I first started using the site, I will admit that it was a little overwhelming with the number of videos offered. I had a hard time filtering and trying to find a specific class that I wanted to take.
However, as you begin to use the system and tell Grokker which videos you loved and which experts you want to follow, the site begins to tailor the experience to you and begins to recommend more videos that match your preferences. Since there are so many videos on the site, I liked that you can bookmark a video and save it for later.
What sets Grokker apart
What really sets Grokker apart from other online fitness and yoga services is the level of community and interaction the site offers. On most other sites, you do your video and then maybe you take the conversation to a different social platform like Twitter or Instagram. Grokker aims to create that sense of community and interaction right there on its site so you don’t have to go anywhere else.
- Add comments and questions to videos and to the Q&A Cafe
- Interact with other participants and Grokker experts
- Post your milestones.
At its core, its more than just a place to find great video content. It’s a social network and a connected community coming together to help each other #BeABetterYou. And isn’t that what we all want?
With its new group fitness class experience, Grokker takes a step further. On the homepage, you’ll see a schedule for the live group fitness classes for the week. When you join the class, your name is announced in the chat window. Pre-class, you can chat with other participants and you can continue the discussion afterwards too. It’s like being at a live class without the hassles of actually going to a live class. Kind of cool, right?
#BeABetterYou with Grokker Wellness Challenge
For the month of October, Grokker is sponsoring a wellness challenge with Fitfluential. I love that it’s not a regular fitness challenge and that the focus is on wellness – everything from yoga to meditation to healthy cooking.
Go check it out and there are great prizes to win too!
