Friday Round-Up: Finding Focus

Man. I had big plans this week. Plans to catch up on work, to write, to finally respond to all the thoughtful comments you all have left on my posts. I swear I read each and every one and they mean so much to me. I’ve just been having trouble finding myself in front of the computer long enough to reply.

Cue Blogger’s Guilt.

I admit that I’m a little off my game lately. I feel like I’m all over the place with work-related stuff – trying to break into teaching yoga, trying to pitch more freelance writing work, trying to maintain my current consulting clients so that I’m generating at least some income, trying to train for a half marathon. Oh yeah, and trying to be present in my home with my family.

While I’ve been DO-ing a lot, it’s a bit like throwing a whole bunch of spaghetti up at the ceiling and seeing what sticks. Not very efficient nor effective. I need to focus my DO-ing more, get my ducks in a row, you know?

That might mean blogging here less often – I’m not sure yet. But hey! That just means that you will have less to catch up on in your reader/email and then you’ll be really excited to see me when I do write, right??

One bit of exciting news that I wanted to share – I was named one of Zulily’s 10 favorite health and fitness bloggers! I’m honored to be included with the likes of Michele, Kristin, Katie, Madeline, and Katy. Total rock stars.

 

 

I have to be honest. I didn’t read that much this week so I have a short Friday round-up for you. But they are fantastic reads so go read them if you haven’t already.

From the hilarious to the absurd – this pillow that Tracy found at Nordstrom is ridiculous and Tracy’s response is brilliant. By the way, I’m so glad that Tracy is blogging every day this year because her posts so far this month have been amazing. I love reading all her words.

How I Stopped Procrastinating
I need to stop procrastinating. That might be part of the reason that I’m feeling unfocused. Maybe I need to try what the author did in this article, sans the broken hip.

    For me, blogging is a bonus “fun” thing. It should be something that gets pushed to the back burner when life gets crazy. However, it’s easier said than done. I want my blog to do well, which means being active with it. I’m constantly trying to balance it out. Planning helps but isn’t the cure all. Best of luck to you in getting it figured out. When you do, can you tell me the secret??

    Bloggers guilt. yes! I know about that! I also feel a lot better blogging less – and keeping up with my tribe as I can. Things shift and it’s OK that this shifted too or that it may have to shift for you. and I love your roundup posts. I read Tracy’s a few days ago and loved her letter about the skinny pillow. Skinny pillow? I mean WTH?

    Love Angela and Ilene’s comments on blogging. I started blogging as a creative outlet, but I quickly learned that it can become a major time commitment. I want my blog to be successful, but I have to balance that with my professional career, family, and the other things that make me tick, like running. And don’t even get me started on all of the things I SHOULD be doing, like housework! Plus, this week has been a total disaster. Snow days, brutal temps, and an ear infection for my oldest. There just aren’t enough hours in the day (or night!) to get it all done. No matter what you decide, we’ll be here, ready to read anything & everything you write, no matter what the frequency.

      It is a lot of work to keep up a blog. And like you, once I start something, I want to do it well so of course I’m going to spend a lot of time on it. I think that all this trouble with balancing things has been exacerbated by this crazy winter and all the snow!! Hoping that things will go back to more balance when the weather gets warmer :-)

    Let me know when you figure it out because I am in the exact same boat! Blogging is so fun yet so consuming. My goal is to build my blog this year AND my writing business. Balancing them both is challenging for sure.

    I’m actually glad you have a shorter round-up here b/c I’m suffering from the same disorder as you!! Plus, I’m away all weekend at a wedding in another state – ugh. Can’t seem to catch a break here but I’m sure things will even out soon, right? :-)

    I’ve really cut back on blogging, commenting on other blogs ( =( ) and just being on social media the last few months…It was tough at first, but I’ve gotten a lot better with it now. I knew I needed to cut back on something b/c I felt like I was doing too much all the time. Don’t feel guilty about anything you listed. Make time for yourself and your family…and things that will help grow your brand. So if you don’t blog as often or comment as much, don’t stress !!!

      Thanks Michele. I’m starting not to stress as much about the blogging, reading/commenting and social media and trying to do what I can when I can. If that means responding to comments 2 weeks later or reading blogs in batches instead on the day it was posted, so be it. I’m glad to hear that you are finding a bit more balance. It is crazy when you feel like you’re doing too much all the time.

    I think sometimes you need a break. With anything in life, I compare it to running, if you ran hard everyday you would have a horrible race . We all need rest and recovery. You need to take blocks of time that you give yourself permission to not respond, comment, tweet and share. It is perfectly acceptable, and anyone that has a problem with that or stops reading your because you don’t respond one time, is not worth your time anyway. Please take a break, it refreshes your mind so that you can come back at a latter time and write quality content.

      I think that you’re right. A break is good. And even though it might not look like I’ve taken a real break from blogging, I definitely have mentally. I’m not stressing about it as much and just trying to do what I can when I can. I don’t want to feel like an obligation. Thank you my friend for your constant support!

    I said the same thing to Tracy – that I love that she’s blogging every day because she’s just writing brilliant things. Also? I know all about blogger’s guilt. I’ve not replied to comments since last week and that’s never happened before. I haven’t been returning visits/ comments as often either.
    But, I am on vacation, and before that, I was squaring things away, trying to do it all.
    One person, 24 hours. Impossible. :)

    You do have a lot going on and you just have to be kind to yourself!! Teaching yoga is so new for you that it makes sense it would take a lot of time (and cause much stress!!!).
    I think that no matter how often or little you are able to post you always share worthwhile information.

    I put them all aside to read – yay!
    And I love Zulily very much.
    I’m excited about the being married to a blogger post. I always wonder what’s worse for Cassidy – being married to a photographer who uses him as a test subject, constantly rearranges lighting, and makes him repeat things he’s already done..17 times. Or is it worse to be married to a writer? Namely, one who reveals things about you!
