Dream Big for Life

Since it’s Friday, I thought it would be fitting to end the week with some inspiration – some food for thought as we head into the weekend. I’m honored to have Laura from Mommy Run Fast over today. Laura is an incredible wife, mom, runner and friend. She’s here today to share her thoughts on dreaming big.

=========================

Hi everyone! I’m thrilled to be at Love, Life, Surf today. Thank you, Christine, for the invitation!

As Christine is off at her yoga teacher training, I thought it would be fun to talk about fulfilling dream. When was the last time you made an adult “What I want to be when I grow up list?” Is it something you think about?

I’m amazed at how many discussions I’ve had with friends and colleagues wondering what we want to do when we grow up, even in the midst of careers we’ve chosen and enjoy.

For better or worse, our generation has more fluidity than those before us. We know that we can completely change our career if we want to.

I am all for big dreams!

Lowell Lundstrum quote

Christine has shared that her dreams scare her. Mine do, too!

I made a big switch in the past few years. I loved my job as the Director of a non-profit but we moved to another state and I decided to stay home with my daughter, sorting out what I might want to do career wise. I knew I wanted to merge my passions and include health and fitness in some way.

biggest talent

I love nutrition. And I love running and spin classes. So I started by becoming a spin instructor. And then went through Integrative Nutrition to start my practice as a health coach. And somewhere in there added a running coach certification as well. I kept blogging. I pieced together my passions to make meaningful work and it is exactly where I want to be.

One of the biggest lessons for me throughout this process was to choose contentment in the moment. As excited as I was about the end result, I would miss an entire year of my life if I didn’t slow down to look around me and choose joy in the moment.

choose joy

I still have big dreams… write a book? Open a wellness center with other holistic care providers? Start a non-profit to assist in the country’s obesity crisis? New running PRs?

I was reminded recently that we have a lifetime to fulfill our big dreams. It’s important to think about where we want to go, but to also pace ourselves to fulfill them and enjoy today as much as possible.

I’m so excited for Christine as she fulfills this piece of her big dream!

Do you have big dreams? Do you have a time table to go after them? Do you remind yourself to also choose contentment now?

Love it! I have so many dreams that sometimes I find it difficult to narrow down. But this morning I had a vision of moving to the mountains, become a sustainable blogger, work part-time in a cafe (because I love making coffee n such), hold an outdoor blogging retreat, run/hike trails, live in a beautiful place, be around great friends… its nice to read how you hold many passions, but are making them work all together for you.

So nice to see Laura here! I always say I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I do enjoy what I do right now but the business side of it is no fun. I have so many dreams floating around in my head but sometimes fear and breaking out of the “traditional box”, stops me from pursuing any of them. Great post on the reminder of we have a lifetime to go after our dreams…pace yourself. Something that I’m not very good at! ;)

Great and inspiring post! I love that both you ladies have left the comfort zone behind and moved on to follow your dreams. I have no doubt that you both will be successful in these new endeavors.

I have to admit that at my age, I’m pretty content with where I am and what I have accomplished. I have a few mini-dreams left, but I feel good about the paths I have chosen to date and could die content if that were to happen right now (how morbid sounding is that?).

I’ve just recently gotten to know Laura through her weekly menu plan link up.

My big dream was becoming a full time writer and I took the leap in July, 2013. I’m still finding my footing, but it’s going well and I am so glad I followed a dream that was so big it scared the living daylights out of me!

    Love Laura and her blog!

This is a topic that hits close to home. I recently had my second baby and although I enjoy being a nurse the crazy hours and stress of the job I have may not be compatible with the new life of a mom of 2. This has led me to ask what do I want to be when I grow up? I’m asking the big questions just need to find the answers. Thanks for this post!!

Great guest post by one of my favorite speedy runners!!
I think when I was younger (like y’all’s ages) I didn’t follow all of my dreams – not sure I even made big plans then. Now I do have some dreams that have already been reached and others in process and many that have changed a lot over the past few years!!!

I love this post SO much! One of my favorite quotes is the one that you shared about your dreams scaring you. This is so important, and I don’t challenge myself enough. I often do what I’m comfortable with, and don’t step outside my comfort zone. I’m so glad that I signed up for my first half because it’s a big dream and REALLY scary! I love your plans for the future. I want to do something like that too :) Follow your dreams because you are awesome and deserve it! Also, choose joy is quickly becoming one of my favorite quotes as well. Thanks for including it!!

This is so good. I do have dreams and goals but feel like I’ve put them on pause after becoming a mom. I have a hard time seeing how they fit in. But I don’t want to give up on them. I’ve always wanted to go back and complete my original career choice to become a registered dietitian. But I have no desire right now to go back to school, even part time. So I like what you said about piecing together meaningful work and I feel like that’s what I’m doing with my blog and running coaching. For now it fits and I really enjoy it. But I don’t want to let that big dream go, I’m just not sure when it will happen. Thanks for sharing!
