5 Reasons To Rent a House for Your Next Vacation

One of my favorite parts of summer is our family vacation. We usually take two weeks and plant ourselves somewhere outside of New York City.

Over the past seven years, we’ve spent time in the country (the Berkshires and the Hudson Valley) and at the beach (from Montauk to the Jersey Shore to Hawaii). Living in a city, we wanted to be able to expose our kids to different landscapes and environments other than the concrete kind. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to spend time together as a family in a low-key setting.

One reason we’ve been able to do this (aside from having a flexible work schedule thanks to freelancing) is by renting a vacation home. It’s been one of the best changes we’ve made to how we travel.

Why Rent a Vacation Home

1. Get more for your money

The price per night for a vacation rental is often the same, sometimes less, than the nightly rate at a hotel. BUT, instead of getting just one room (sometimes two if you get a suite), you get a whole house (or townhouse or condo). Bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living room. Sometimes outdoor space.

It makes traveling so.much.more.comfortable. because there’s room for everyone.

2. Makes mealtimes easier

Both of my kids have numerous food allergies, and one of my kids is a really picky eater. That makes it difficult to eat out in restaurants and we can’t always be sure we’ll find the food that they can eat.

With a full size kitchen, we can stock it with essentials  so we always have safe food and drink available. And I can feel comfortable about what I’m feeing my kids. We prepare lunch and dinner at home a few times a week so that we’re not constantly eating out. That also means that we save a little bit of money. In the mornings, we don’t have to rush out of the hotel room to find breakfast (or coffee!!). It’s right there waiting for us.

3. Pack less

Many vacation rental homes have a washer and dryer. Since we can do laundry once (or several times) during our vacation, we only need to pack about half of the amount of clothes. You also don’t have to let your clothes lay around stinky for more than a few days.

4. Get a local’s perspective

By renting a home, we can slow down our vacation. It gives us a chance to settle into the town and explore all the nooks and crannies and get to know the surrounding area. We get to discover local restaurants, farmers markets, shops, and really pretend to be locals for a few weeks and try on living somewhere other than a big city.

5. No more hanging out in the bathroom

Not for the reason that you think. At night, the kids go to sleep hours before my husband and I do. When we stay in a hotel where we’re all sharing one room, we are often relegated to hanging out in the bathroom where we can keep the light on after the boys are asleep. Or else we’re hiding in the corner of the room, trying to minimize the light from our computer screens and not wake the kids. Or, we all go to sleep at 8pm.

We now use vacation rental not just for our yearly family vacation but for shorter trips too. Once you’ve rented a vacation home once, it’s hard to go back!

I’ve always been a hotel person so I get a break from the cooking and the cleaning, but I do see the benefits of renting a place. Now we are looking at rentals so we can bring our dog with us. 😉

We often rent a vacation house for the same reasons you and your family do Christine. More space, less money and the option to eat more meals at home. Much easier to stay on plan with nutrition that way!
