It’s always a bit tricky to stay active with you’re on the road and traveling. You’re out of your element. You may not have access to a gym. You may not be able to stick to your “routine.” However, it’s also an opportunity to explore new ways of being active while exploring a new city.
Lucky for me, being in the San Francisco Bay Area makes being active a bit easier. We’ve been here for about a week and a half now and I’ve managed to fit fitness into my days, in-between all the play time with family, sightseeing and exploring.
Skiing for three days in Lake Tahoe – This almost didn’t count because it was so fun. It didn’t feel like I was working out but by the end of the day, my legs were burning.
Running – One of my favorite places to run is along the Embarcadero in San Francisco. It’s nice and flat and offers beautiful views of the water like the photo above. I’ve also run some trails in the East Bay while visiting my sister. So different than running in New York City.
{By the way, I made that video using the new app Vine. Have you used it? It’s kind of fun and addictive, not that I need another social media outlet to become addicted to!}
Workout videos and apps – I’ve been doing workouts in the apartment through FitnessGlo including fun barre workouts (stay tuned for a full review tomorrow and giveaway!) and at the gym using Nike Training Club. Both offer lots of fun and challenging workouts of various length.
Yoga – I’ve been sneaking in yoga here and there during the trip – some sun salutations in the morning or after a run and some fun yoga poses while we’re out exploring.
Running after two little boys – When you travel with two kids who are 3.5 and almost 6 years old, you cannot not be active. They run everywhere, meaning that we have to run everywhere to catch them. For example, we brought them to see Stanford University’s campus. If you have visited the campus before, you know that it’s pretty big and expansive. The boys and their cousins ran around a good portion of the grounds, wanting to explore every nook and cranny. We chased them for about 3 hours and everyone needed a nap afterwards!
Do you try to stay active while you’re on the road and traveling? What’s your favorite way to fit in fitness?

I’ve been so jealous of all of your pics on IG from your vacation. Running along the Embarcadero is so great. Plus, I’m jealous of the weather!

I’m with Angela–I’m jealous! When my kids were younger and not in school, we used to take a nice chunk of Feb. to travel as well. I miss it!
You are doing great mixing it up on your trip and you certainly have great environs for doing it. I think working out on vacation is the best. My favorite trips allow me good running combined with great family hikes.

I usually try to hit the hotel gym while my family is asleep. Otherwise we usually are walking around all day. I really need a ski vacation, but now we’re into lacrosse season.

Great variety in your workouts for traveling! We’ll be doing the same next week, and I love your idea to use online workouts. Enjoy the family time and gorgeous weather!

haha I would be crazy woman without my workouts on vacation with the kids!
We must be one the same wavelength – my post yesterday was abot how I stay active. It’s all about using what you have! I love running in San Fran. lots to look at to help you forget about all those hills.
I always stay active. I am that weirdo who picks a hotel or condo solely based on if they have a decent gym and/or a running path nearby

I usually walk a lot when I travel, since I’m out exploring. I’ll also usually run while I’m away. The big problem is getting out of my routine. I stay active enough, but hate missing weightlifting and swimming. I’m an old lady, I hate having my routine broken!

My husband and I just got back from a week in Germany visiting family. I ran my usual 3 days a week, with my husband accompanying me on a few runs, we cycled everywhere, and I did some of my Daily Ab App and You Are Your Own gym workouts. It also helped that we were visiting our 4 nephews and niece!
Great photos!

That’s so great that you guys were able to keep up with your workouts and yes! nephews and nieces do help you stay active too!
Love this! I definitely try to stay active on vacations. Cruise ship makes it easy with the gym and I love being up before most people and just taking a long run around the ship with minimal traffic and enjoying the early morning sea air. Helps with any sea sickness too

I haven’t had much opportunity to travel elsewhere since finding my exercise happiness, but when I visit my parents in TN I try to get a few runs in around my old neighborhoods and reminisce.

One of my favorite ways of “seeing” a different city is by running it – even if that means getting up super early before my kids are up!
Glad you are finding ways of staying active!!

Staying active while traveling is so tricky! I have a hard time when my routine is changed (plus you can’t surf many places, which is my main exercise). It seems like you’ve stayed really active while you’ve been away! The tips you suggested are great…bring your workout with you! Seems obvious, but I never remember to do it! Thanks for the reminder.

It’s true. It’s a little harder when surfing is your main form of exercise! My favorite way to ensure that I work out when I travel is to pack my gym clothes and sneakers. I feel compelled to use them since they took up luggage space!
Hey My friend Susan is up there skiing and hanging out in Napa and San Francisco..I am at her house house/petsitting as I type!!
You always seem to manage to make it to our coast..but just never south enough!

Some vacations the intent is to disconnect and relax, but honestly my fun is usually pretty active. Scuba diving, snowboarding, or speed-sightseeing (like all the sights in Athens in 6 hours!).

We were traveling this weekend, and I started off with the best of intentions – gym back packed and ready to go! Then each day got filled with various activities and errands, and not a single workout was completed. I love the idea of taking the kids somewhere you can let them run around and you can run around after them.

What????? you are on the West Coast and you are not coming to surf with us in South California ???? So close….
I love running through a city I don’t know – it’s the best way to become familiar with a new place – and I am looking at your Instragram feed and see you met Brian! That is so great!
