Friday Round-Up: Intentions and Passions

Hot air balloons over Turkey

This photo doesn’t really have anything to do with my post. I just love it. I “borrowed” it from my Mom.

Do you have a hard time settling back into the swing of things after the holidays or vacation? To be honest, I was ready for the holidays to be done. Not that I didn’t enjoy them but I was just tired by the end. I was ready to take the Christmas decorations down and bring the tree to the curb to be mulched. I was longing to return to routine.

One thing that I’ve missed over the past couple of weeks is Friday Round-Up. In keeping with my word for the year, many of these posts have to do with intentions and passions. So here you go.

The only resolution you need to make
I recently discovered Caren’s blog and love it. Sometimes I rush when I read blogs but with Caren, I grab my cup of coffee, slow down and read. Every.Single.Word. This is probably one of my favorite posts, especially this part:

“When you show up, you awaken to who you really are. Who you are is none of the worries, the guilt trips, the cloudy days, Who you are is the glue when all your pieces fall apart. And that’s yoga – the putting together of all the pieces of you. The real you: no filters, no facades, just a capital S beautiful Soul.”

Dear America: Yoga is Not a Sport
Oftentimes, when we think of someone as being “good” at yoga, I think we picture someone who is super bendy and can get into the most advanced expression of a pose. As a result, we often compete with ourselves and others to see how far we can push ourselves. This is a great reminder that yoga is much more than that.

I’m not my leanest
I love this post from Tina. I love her honesty and perspective on the fact that she’s not at her leanest and how she’s OK with that because because that’s not her #1 goal.

How I Met Your Mother – The Confrontation
I’m not a huge Les Miserables fanatic but I have fond memories of watching the original production on Broadway when I was in elementary school. I had no idea what the story was about – I got the gist of it – but that didn’t matter. The music was beautiful. In this video, Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Segel of “How I Met Your Mother” Sing “Confrontation” from Les Miz on the Megan Mullally Show. Pure genius.

Surfing is like…
Many people ask me what surfing is like – what it feels like. This is what it’s like – as described by some every day surfers at my favorite place in the world – Costa Rica.

Also, since it is the New Year, there are a number of different challenges going on designed to help you kick-start your year and to keep you motivated. Here are two great ones:

Run This Year
Pavement Runner and Running Hutch have teamed up and put together an epic challenge – #RunThisYear. That’s right – run 2,013 miles in 2013. It’s worth it to head over to his post just to watch their video. Are you in?

pv.Body Challenge
You may remember that I mentioned pv.Body a few weeks ago and the awesome workout clothes that I received from them. Well, pv.Body wants to help kick-start your New Year and put those workout clothes to good use. They are running a 30 day challenge in January. You get access to a personal trainer and nutritionist to help you reach your goals. Each day, you’ll receive a challenge (workouts, recipes, meal plans, group activities, etc.).

It’s available to new and existing pv.Body members and it’s free!

New to pv.Body? Sign up & get 20% when you use this link. Then sign up for the challenge using the link below

Already a member? Sign up for the 30 day challenge here.

(Please note that you will not receive the discount through this link. You have to sign up through my link above to receive the 20% off. I am an affiliate of pv.Body.)

How’s the New Year treating you so far? Have you gotten used to writing 2013 yet?

Thanks for the new to me blogs – love Happy Momentum. Can’t wait to read more from her!

  4. Great roundup this week. I love the “yoga is not a sport” concept. How very American that we make it competitive!

I am with you–I am always done with the holidays before the whole thing is over. Enough of the sweets, socializing and alcohol–it’s nice to get back to the norm!

    Have a great weekend.

  8. I was ready to get the house organized, but I still have my Christmas tree up — in the church calendar, Christmas isn’t “over” until Ephiphany on Sunday, but I still may not be ready! It is just so pretty! I read an article saying that one reason that LesMis may do so well is people who have fond memories of seeing it in the theater. I did not see it on stage, and was not excited about it, but I saw it and REALLY enoyed it!

  11. It’s actually been easy for me to start writing 2013 this year, very weird! I am, however, having a hard time shifting back into work mode – I had so much fun on vacation. And our Christmas decorations are staying up through this weekend, I read something about the season actually lasting through this weekend. :)

  17. Surfing does feel like you’re weightless and forces you to be in the moment. I found it so baffling how you work so hard to ride a wave, and when you’re up and standing on the board, it’s the most effortless thing in the world. I can’t wait for warmer weather so I can get out on my SUP!

I would like the routine and eating routine that comes with work, but I could use another week to get all the stuff done that I thought I could’ve achieved over my Christmas break. Back to work Monday, yuck!

  18. I love being competitive but I agree that there are some things that we shouldn’t promote competition in such as yoga. Yoga should be a personal experience.

    Great round up. Happy Weekend!

  19. NPH needs to be my BFF

  20. I love the links you’ve provided and totally agree with the “yoga is not a sport”. Bex also said something the other day how yoga isn’t about the poses, and instead of making a specific pose your goal, it should be about your heart and your mind. I love the feeling I get when I get into certain poses but I love the mental clarity and happy feelings I get from doing yoga more. Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked. LOVE that video of Jason Segal and Neil Patrick Harris. LOVE them. And love you!

    • I think that’s why I keep going back to yoga. It used to be just about the physical practice for me but more and more it’s about the mental clarity like you said and just the emotional connection. I think I have to go watch that NPH and Jason Segal video again. And love you!

  21. Thanks for sharing these posts and videos! I haven’t written the date yet, so I’ll have to let you know next time I write a cheque!

  22. I was so over the Holidays before they arrived. HOWEVER I did manage to enjoy them.. even though as you know the end of the Year and Holiday season did bring me lots of sorrow.

NOW.. i am reinventing myself and moving forward with a clean new me. As I posted in my blog.

SO I am ready for 2013 and am off to a great start with my detox and I already have some very good job leads. I am gun ho to be employed by end of month..

I am also still surfing during the winter.. it is cold but yet refreshing and cleansing!

Happy New Year to You and Yours..and seriously you need to come out west so we can get our surf on!

    • I can’t believe that I’m just responding to this now but I’m so happy to hear that you’re still surfing this winter. Happy New Year to you my friend! I do need to make a trip out to Southern Cali to visit. I would love that!

    • I’m embarrassed that I’m just responding to you comment now. Honestly, I kind of want to include your post every week in my round-up. I love your posts, the insights you offer and how you connect them to specific poses. I hope that you do get a chance to surf this year! I only started almost 2 years ago on a trip to Costa Rica and fell in love with it.

  26. I love your round up – you know that. And I really enjoyed Caren’s post. And I am a HUGE fan of Ustrasana and was glad to see it featured in her article! And I loved Yoga is Not a Sport. One of my mantras as a yoga teacher is: There is no such thing as being good at yoga!
