Yay! It’s Friday! Do you know what I’m really excited for? The Golden Globes this weekend! OK, really I just want to see the pretty dresses on the red carpet.
Thank you all for your input on which half marathon I should run this year. I really appreciate your advice. I think that I’m leaning towards the Brooklyn Half. Or possibly doing the Broad Street 10 miler in Philly in May and then a Fall half marathon. Then a certain Pavement Runner and a certain Darwinian Fail decided to up the ante and throw the Toronto Marathon into the mix with promises of lots of Fitfluential friends, making my decision all the more difficult. Not nice friends. Not nice. Back to the drawing board.
One of my other goals for the year is to read more books. I read a lot of blogs (which I love) but there’s nothing like getting lost in a good story and being totally consumed by it. I was all set to dive into Gone Girl when I received a notice from the library that a copy of Matched was being held for me.
I first spied it on my friend Kristen’s Instagram and then I saw that it made Shell’s list of Keepers from last year. I’m hoping that it will satisfy my need for dystopian young adult fiction until the third book of the Divergent series is released.
I also recently started reading Danielle LaPorte’s The Fire Starter Sessions, which is a guide to define success on your own terms. I’m not really the self-help book type but there’s something about this book that intrigues me. You should watch some of her videos – she sparks a fire and makes you want to cultivate your inner passions. That passion and fire is also part of my commitment to live intentionally this year. My husband thinks that I’m just going through a midlife crisis.
On to this week’s round-up. They are all about journeys in one way or another and the question – how did I get here?
Surrender, Trust, Believe
This is one of my favorite posts from the week. Lisa talks about her quest for a marathon PR which, while it hasn’t resulted in that coveted PR, it has revealed some important life lessons. I admire her perspective and her passion, and her strength of character comes across through her words. Lisa is also organizing a virtual run to support her good friend and her 6 year-old son who is battling cancer. Please consider making a donation or running in support of Kyle’s Krusade.
Discomfort: A skill for running and life
I totally identified with Tiffany’s post. While I was driven to perform well academically growing up, I wasn’t born with the inherent ability to push myself in physical pursuits because it was hard, I would be uncomfortable, and I was afraid of failing. It is a learned skill.
Labels are Bullshit
Labels abound in our society. Sometimes, they are helpful – they help us sort and organize and figure out how to “deal” with a situation. Sometimes, they aren’t so helpful. Sometimes, we’re so eager to label people and things because that’s the easiest thing to do. This post from Alison dives into many of the complicated feelings when labels are applied to our children.
50 Ways Other People’s Kids Suck
I’m sorry. This post from Scary Mommy is just funny. And true. Yes, your kids suck (and I mean that in the nicest way possible).
Eoin Finn: How Did I get here?
OK, so I know that I featured a video about surfing last week but I couldn’t resist this video about what surfing can teach us about life. ”What surfing has taught me about life: when to paddle, when to relax, and when to ride a wave and enjoy yourself as much as possible.”
Happy Weekend everyone! Are you excited for movie award season? Have you read any good books? I’d love to complete my list of books to read this year. Do you use Good Reads? Should I sign up?

Thank you for including my post, Christine. This one was close to my heart (and nerves!).
I just finished Gone Girl – in about a day! It was so good. I too, intend to read more books this year, so I’m well pleased I’m one down out of 12 (yes, not very ambitious). Good luck with deciding on which races you’re doing!

Your target number of books is still higher than mine. I’m aiming for 4-5 books. Aiming low in hopes of surpassing my expectations
Ahh! I played with the idea of doing Toronto, but it’s the same weekend as our annual Vancouver running trip. Just clicked on the posts that I haven’t read already this week, great round up!

I am seriously considering Toronto. Eeck! I’m not sure if it will work out but it would be a lot of fun.
Great list as usual! I loved Lisa’s post about surrendering. And 50 reasons why other people’s kids suck is perfectly funny. BTW – your kids suck, too.
Hehehe!
I’ve been meaning to read Gone Girl. I’ve heard so many good things. I just got 2 books from the library as part of my read 6 books in 2013 project. Haven’t cracked ‘em open yet….oh oh!

That post from Scary Mommy was hilarious and so so true! Especially the one about your kids sneezing directly in my kid’s face. I just picked up Match from the library today. I hope I get to read it before it’s due back!
Excellent round up, as usual! I’m very excited to read Scary Mommy’s post b/c the last one you turned me onto was so funny!
I’ve run Broad St. 2x and it’s lots of fun (not to mention fast). Plus, I love Phila. Let me know when you decide on the spring race. And Toronto–you should go for it!
My very favorite book from 2012 was The Light Between Oceans. SO. GOOD. Get it!

Oh! I just looked up that book and it looks great! Thanks for the suggestion. Now I’m leaning towards doing Broad Street since the Brooklyn half is the same weekend as BLEND and I kind of really want to go to BLEND (and I think you should too). Toronto is still kind of in the mix. We’ll see! Will definitely let you know when I decide!
i always love your round ups, such PURPOSEFUL writing. Elizabeth’s post was a wonderful and inspiring read, for sure!

Awww, thanks my friend!
I’ve seen that book and have been very intrigued. Hmmm. Happy Friday!

I remember seeing a snippet of one of Danielle LaPorte’s videos and she has the kind of persona that draws you in immediately. I’ve only read the first 10 pages or so but I’m kind of excited about it. Happy weekend to you Heidi!
So I might see you in Toronto?
Great link up…
I’ve been loving my book: Savor – Mindful Eating, Mindful Life.
Have a great weekend!

Maybe…I’m looking into the possibility of joining you all. Thanks for the book suggestion too. That looks great!
Your roundups are the best, so you can imagine the glow on my face as I opened this post up . Thank you so much! Thank you for sharing the race, it means so much to me. Have a wonderful weekend my beautiful friend. xoxo

Your post was beautiful and had to be shared. And Kyle’s Krusade? Definitely had to be shared. I need to sign up as well. xoxo have a great weekend!
I just started the Happiness Project. So far I like it, but I am a YA Lit fan. Next on my list is the Divergent series!

I LOVED the Divergent series. I may have read both books 3 times…
Yes! Loved Lisa’s post. And I’m heading over to the discomfort one… perfect timing for me with race weekend here. I am hoping to read more books this year too, although so far my ever-growing list is related to nutrition, health and running. I need to throw some fun reads in there!

You’re going to do great this weekend. There are so many books that I want to read! I really need to find the time to read them.
As always, thank you for the links!! You seriously always find the best posts from the week (and so many seem to be ones that I missed). Heading over to Lisa’s now – somehow I missed hers!!! Have a wonderful weekend with those boys of yours! Are you planning some nice runs in this gorgeous weather we will be having!??!
Definitely read Lisa’s post. It’s really good. I can’t believe the weather this weekend. I was planning on running but I need to wait and see. I had acupuncture today to help ease some of my muscle pain/tightness in my hamstring and I’m a bit sore. Hoping that it will ease up by Sunday! Have a great weekend Michele!
Great collections of posts! I loved Lisa’s post, plus I signed up for her virtual race. Now I’ll be off to check out the others (especially Scary Mommy’s
).
I don’t read YA usually, but I loved Gone Girl.

I can’t wait to start reading Gone Girl. I’ve heard such great things. Scary Mommy’s post is hilarious. Definitely read it if you haven’t already (and it takes like a minute to read).
I read about a book a week because I can’t function without a book. The types of books I read varies. I do use Good Reads but honestly only because I get all my books free from the publisher and it also gives me a nice page on my blog (click bookshelf and you’ll see it).
I’m not going to watch the award shows, I’ll just wait for the pretty pictures to show up on the net.

I honestly just want to see the dresses.
I may need to read Fire Starter Sessions. Do tell me how it is as you get into it – will you? I also want to read more ficution this year. Gone Girl is on my list thanks to Shell too!
This is the first year in ages that I’ve actually seen several of the movies that came out last year — one upside of our empty nest! I need to get back to reading. I think I should be able to get a head start on my book-a-month-goal on my international flights this week.

I laughed at your husband thinking your having a midlife crisis. Mine definitely thinks I’m going crazy too.
I need to read more books this year too. Just makes life better.
