The Two of You

One of you is long and lean.
One of you is short and (more on the) squat side.
Both of you are brothers.

Both of you are so full of emotion that can only be expressed as physical exuberance.
One of you can’t go through a day without at least 10 hugs.
One of you thinks that a body slam is an appropriate way to give a hug.
One of you likes to take care of the other.
Both of you surprise me with unexpected cuddles.

Both of you love singing and putting on concerts.
None of you sing in tune even though one of you tries really hard.

One of you loves eating fruits and vegetables
One of you refuses to eat real fruit. Dehydrated or pureed fruit – yes. Fresh fruit – no.
Both of you love ice cream but
None of you like pie.

Both of you have overflowing treasure boxes.
One of you hoards treasures – the smaller in size, the better – marbles, pennies, guitar picks, jewels, rocks, acorns.
One of you creates a mountain of drawings every day.

Both of you are stubborn.
Both of you think you’re the boss but
One of you is the real boss.

Both of you embrace life.
Both of you love life.
Both of you love exploring together.
Both of you love each other.
The two of you are brothers.

  1. Aw. :) I love kids (I have a career that is completely focused on kids), but have been stressing about how I will ever be able to have kids with my career and loans and all that. I talked to hubs about it and actually thought, “It will be okay if we don’t have kids. I won’t feel sad about it.” But when I saw your pics I said, “Nevermind. Must.have.kids.”

    • Aww, thank you. They kind of rock my world in a way that I never ever expected. I wasn’t sure that I wanted kids but now, watching these two together and how they love each other makes my heart swell. They are kind of ridiculous together.

  17. I LOVE THIS!!!
    Seriously?
I am picturing this tangible, in a frame, hanging on a wall. This is something that they will treasure forever and ever and one day, when they are fathers perhaps, they will read it again through tired eyes and say “My mother wrote this.”

    • Oh thank you Kim. I so appreciate your comment. I kind of wrote this on a lark and pretty quickly but now, I’m so glad that I did. I think that I will create something from this for them to have in their room and hopefully hang on to as they get older.

  18. Oh. I love the hockey pictures best. And really, I suspect your ‘on the squat side’ model is going to shoot up here very soon.

    • Thank you so much. I kind of love that he’s a little on the squat side but yes, I have a feeling he’s going to sprout up soon!

  19. I know where you’re coming from, having my two boys. I always tell them that they are brothers forever. My own two brothers aren’t very close, but I hope for my boys, they will remain close forever! Great writing!

    • Thank you Jill. I keep reminding them that they are stuck with each other which I think delights them and scares them at the same time :-) I know what you mean. I wasn’t terribly close to my sibling growing up because they were 5 and 7 years older but we’re close now and I’m so thankful for my siblings.

  20. This just warms my heart. Beautiful beautiful words and pictures. The love for your sons oozes out of this post. Thank you for sharing them with us.

  23. I LOVE TIHS POEM!!! I just realized that we already follow each other (lol) but I love this poem! I’m telling you this sounds just like my boys! That’s truly amazing – esp the body slamming thing? omg!! AND the hugging thing? Yes! This is terrific. Your blog inspires me.

I do love it, though, and I’m glad Stasha inspired both of us to write these. Someday our guys will laugh reading them. I have one who needs 10+ hugs a day, too, and he’s turned me into a convert!
