Scenes from my weekend: St. Kitts

Flying above Hurricane Sandy

So remember when I said that I was going to take 10 minutes for myself starting on Friday? Well, I ended up taking taking much more than 10 minutes. Actually, it looks like I might be taking some more time.

On Friday, I flew down to St. Kitts to attend the wedding of one of my close friends from high school. It was fantastic – an impromptu reunion of old friends who I haven’t seen or spent time with in a long time. On Saturday afternoon, we set sail aboard the Spirit of St. Kitts for an amazing afternoon/early evening on the water and an unforgettable wedding ceremony with the sun setting on one side of the boat and the moon rising on the other.

I got to spend some time relaxing and reading my book and magazines. I cannot remember the last time that I sat down and read a magazine from cover to cover. I did miss my boys and often felt like I was missing a few appendages.

On our way down, we flew over Hurricane Sandy and made it there fine. After we flew over the storm, the Caribbean opened up in amazing colors of blue, green and turquoise. But, apparently Hurricane Sandy had other plans in store for me. My flight home on Sunday was diverted to Miami and the next flight out to NYC isn’t until Wednesday. Hmmm, week in Miami?

Last year, Hurricane Irene made it a bit difficult for me to return home after my vacation alone. Instead of flying from Costa Rica to NYC, I flew to Orlando and drove 18+ hours home. It looks like I might be making a similar trip again this year, this time from Miami. My husband has already informed me that I am no longer allowed to travel by myself or during hurricane season.

Do you live between Miami and NYC? Do you want a visitor Monday or Tuesday?? How was your weekend?

  5. Amazing that lightning has struck twice for you! But…Miami isn’t such a bad place to be stuck, is it? Even if you drive, you might want to wait a couple of days. There are so many closed roads here already due to flooding and it’s only going to get worse as the storm surges. Anyhow, try to enjoy yourself and be safe, first and foremost!

  12. Well, both of those are/were freak storms and at least they happened AFTER your vacation. So you got to take the time… Florida is absolutely beautiful right now (sorry all of you in the path of Sandy) with somewhat cooler weather. So, if you have to hang out in Florida for a few days, that timing was good… Congrats on the time away – safe travels getting home!

    • Thank you my friend for helping me find the silver lining!! I wasn’t terribly upset which was surprising. I guess more just dumbstruck at my luck with hurricanes!!

    • Thank you Jill for your kind offer. My friend and I ended up driving (!!) back to New York and the drive wasn’t too bad. When the pilot announced that we were over Hurricane Sandy it was a bit surreal to see the clouds. I’ve never seen anything like it.

  17. I’m in miami!! at least until thursday if I get to go run NYC! shoot me an email!
