We made it! We made it! Thank you all for your support and concern. It was another marathon drive yesterday – 9 hours and approximately 500 miles. We left Raleigh around noon so that we both could get a little bit or work done in the morning and get an update on the road conditions further north. We made a stop at Walmart to stock up on supplies, especially for my friend’s parents in North Jersey who are without power.
The drive itself was pretty uneventful. It was windy but not as bad as the day before. It was drizzling in North Carolina but rained steadily from Virginia until we crossed into New Jersey. We kept passing utility trucks that were making their way north to help restore power to the millions who are currently without. We recognized many of these trucks from earlier parts of our drive in Florida.
It wasn’t until we came closer to New York City that we started to witness some of the storm’s damage and the widespread power outages. Originally, my friend was going to stay in a hotel near Newark airport so that she could rent a car and get to her parents’ house in the morning. Once we pulled off the highway, it was pitch black and there were several down trees and power lines in the streets. The hotel was also pitch black. We immediately turned the car around and headed to my house.
As we drove, it was eerie seeing the lower half of Manhattan pitch black as well as a good portion of Staten Island. One tower of the Verrazano Bridge was dark while the other was illuminated.
Thankfully, our building and apartment are in tact and miraculously we did not lose power during the storm. Ed and boys managed to keep themselves occupied indoors for about three days. I can’t even imagine the hoops my husband jumped through to keep the boys happy. Well, I do know that the boys enjoyed barricading the window in their room with couch cushions, cardboard and pillows.
Apparently, the extra insulation kept their room nice and warm and quiet. They slept through the whole storm and had to be woken up in the morning.
Monday night, as I read my Twitter feed and saw the images being posted, I really questioned our decision to drive back. It started to feel like a dumb decision. I’m glad that it worked out in the end especially since the flight I was rebooked for today was cancelled.
I’m happy to be home. I just want to rest and play with my kids.

I am so glad you made it home safely. The damage is beyond devastating, right? I live a half mile from the flood zone where people lost everything.
On a lighter note, how did you guys manage to keep power? We are out I am told for 7 to 10 days. I do not own an iPad so I am in bloging withdrawal big time! There is no phone app for Typepad

Thanks Michelle and thank you so much for thinking of us. We were pretty lucky overall that there was minimal damage in our neighborhood. However, the coastal communities, especially Rockaway where we surf, are devastated.
I am so unbelievably happy you got home safely. I was stalking your twitter feed like crazy to make sure! I’m glad your boys were able to occupy themselves. They were better off than me.
