Friday Round-Up: TRX, Marathons, Fitness Truths

Reebok FitHub

With Monday as a holiday, Tuesday as my SITS day and baseball playoff games, it’s been a jam-packed week. I haven’t even had a chance to tell you about my fun gym date at Reebok CrossFit Fifth Avenue with a couple of other Fitfluential folks on Saturday!

Fitfluential Reebok TRX clinic

Me, Jill, Kristine, Katelyn, Ashley and Alfonso

Jill, Kristine, Katelyn, Ashley and Alfonso met up to take part in a TRX clinic. I really love TRX. It’s a fun (and hard) way to train. You have to recruit so many different muscles to stabilize yourself in order to perform seemingly simple moves. While it looks hardcore, it can be scaled to different fitness levels and is often used for injury rehab. It was fun to get back to TRX and to learn some new moves.

Reebok kindly sent me this shirt, which I have been coveting since first seeing it back in August.

I really love that Reebok shirt.

On to this week’s Friday Round-up…

26.2 – in moments, snippets and pictures
Last weekend, Jess and her husband Scott ran their very first marathon in Chicago. Chicago was my first marathon too and I also ran it with my husband. It has been wonderful to follow Jess’ and Scott’s journey to 26.2 and to witness how they have tackled training and the race gracefully together as #teamsutera. I love this post because it’s not a traditional recap but captures all the moments surrounding the race beautifully. And the three pictures in the middle!!

A Story of Sisterhood
This post comes from Jo, Jess’ sister. I can’t think of a more poignant tribute to siblings and sisterhood.

Life is My Sport
There’s a lot of competition and comparison in life, especially in the fitness world. While MizFitOnline refers mostly to fitness, I think that her message applies to all areas of life – life IS a sport.

Should you exercise when sick? 5 Reason not to.
Usually, I abide by the rule that if it’s above the neck, go to the gym and if it’s below the neck, stay home. However, this post from Tamara at fitknitchick has me reconsidering my thinking.

7 Things You Should Never Say Out Loud in the Gym
This made me laugh, especially #5. Why do people say such things at the gym?

Lastly, I registered for Tina Reale’s Best Body Bootcamp! I’m really excited about this. I’ve heard such great things about her virtual 8 week fitness program (October 22 -December 17). The $25 registration fee is set aside towards cash prizes. It sounds like loads of fun. Won’t you join me? Registration for Round 3 closes Monday, October 15th.

  1. Thanks for checking me out on facebook Christine! Awesome blog! Wish we had a gym with crossfit near me but I live in the sticks. Thankfully I have an amazing friend, a world class adventure racer who is also a personal trainer so she is hosting a weekly ladies workout similar to Crossfit.

    Love the link roundup too!

    • Thanks Sandra and thanks for checking me out on FB too! That’s so great that your friend is hosting a weekly Crossfit-like workout. I really want to go check out a Crossfit box but it’s a little intimidating!

  2. I read the “7 Things…” blog earlier in the week and it was great. I’ll check out the others.

When I went to the IDEA and IHRSA trade shows this year it was ALL about suspension training. I have mixed feelings about it. I value it, I appreciate it, I recognize it’s potential benefits. But I kind of feel like it should be a PART of a training program, not a stand alone training program. I get the sense that it’s a valuable tool to add into an interval training program that includes endurance training, strength circuits, full body calisthenics and the like. What’s your takeaway on TRX?
Jonathan Aluzas recently posted..Fitness Confidential: Recollections of a Rock ‘n RunMy Profile

    • I think that you’re absolutely right. I don’t think that there’s any ONE thing that should make up one’s training program but that it’s about balance. Like you say – endurance + strength + flexibility and balance, etc.

What I really love about TRX is that suspension training really forces you to recruit so many more muscle groups than just lifting weights and really points out muscle imbalances. To me, it mirrors more functional fitness and functional movements and forces you to stabilize with your core and to work on balance and flexibility while building strength. I also feel like I see more results from TRX. I’d definitely give it a try if you haven’t already.

  3. LOVE TRX! I went to a conference about 5 years ago when it was being first introduced. Everyone was snapping ‘em up from the rep to start training clients or themselves. Such a great piece of equipment that can be used by anyone and anywhere!

Great round up this week. Jess’ recap had me in tears!

I actually read most of those posts this week and I agree, they were hits. I need to read the last one, though–it sounds funny!

Have a great weekend–are you cheering on the Yankees? Can’t believe it’s going to game five. I’ve got my fingers crossed for the Orioles!

    • Yes!! The games have me up way too late – well, actually I probably go to bed around the same time but I don’t accomplish nearly as much :-) The last two nights’ games have been nuts.

  7. I love your roundup and your photos of your busy week!

    • I am completely obsessed with TRX too. It’s really challenging and like you, I’ve seen results faster I think because it requires you to recruit so many different muscles.

  12. How did I not realize Chicago was your first marathon AND that you also ran it with your husband?? Do I live under a rock?? Geeez, total FAIL on my part!! Thank you for such kind words on me and Scott and our journey together, we’ve adored this process SO much and I’m glad that came through in our posts about it. <3

I also LOVED my sister's post…it made me cry like a baby. She's the cutest.

    • haha. I’m not sure that I ever mentioned that Chicago was my first and that I ran it with my husband, I don’t think? I guess that’s why reading about you and Scott resonated with me so much. And yes, your sister is pretty sweet.

  13. I signed up for Best Body Bootcamp weeks ago and I cannot wait for it to be the 22nd. It’s like Christmas in October for me. :) Looks like your TRX workout was fun!! I’ve never tried TRX, but I would really love to!

  14. I love the TRX! I use it for a few of my clients and they love/hate it too. I need to study a little to vary what I do with it.

Thanks for the links. Loved My Trainer Paige’s list. #6–that’s it for me. Ugh. Or UUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

  16. I can’t beleive I haven’t been following you on Twitter! That has been fixed :) Reading about all the fun places people in big cities get to work out at makes me wish I lived closer to a bigger centre. Living in the middle of nowhere has it’s advantages but access to a gym is not one of them. Guess that’s why I love running so much!

    • Thanks Jenny. I’m following you now too! I’ve been terribly lately about keeping up with following people on Twitter. It is great to have all these places to work out in the city but truth be told, I don’t make it out to them very often. And, I still prefer running for the most part too :-)

  17. Sounds like you guys had a rockin’ time Christine!
I love my TRX. Take it with me on holidays. I prefer to use it as part of a whole body workout; alternating between TRX and body weight or dumbbell type exercises. My clients are of two minds; they either love it or hate it!

  18. I didn’t know you and your husband ran your first marathon together– awesome! Mine will occasionally do 3-4 mile jogs, I don’t see him ever doing a full but he did say he’d like to do a half with me someday. We have TRX at our gym but I’ve yet to use it.. have to sign up and pay extra, and I just haven’t taken the time to figure it all out, but I’d love watching other people on it. It looks so fun. Btw you look so strong in that V hold! LOVE my Reebok shirt, too.

    • It’s funny. We ran three marathons together – first 2 while we were dating and then the 3rd right after getting married. We used to joke that it was a good tet of our relationship! If you had a chance to try TRX, it’s definitely fun. It does help to have a trainer or someone show you the moves when you’re starting off just to make sure that you’re doing them correctly. I do adore my Reebok shirt!

  19. You’re going to love BBB!! Tina does a really great job with it!

  20. Ok. I have never even heard of TRX. HAHA. I keep saying that I want to start trying CrossFit and other types of exercises similar to that…but I don’t have the courage. Running is safe for me. It’s what I know. :/

Glad you had such an awesome time! So happy that you got to participate in the event =)

  21. OK, It’s official – I’m in for boot camp. I love this roundup BTW. I love that it’s all tied into fitness and the pictures of you are fantastic. Getting home on Friday and reading this is such a treat!

Are you running NYC? My husband and I are… we met training for a marathon and now are trying to do it with an infant son… quite the adventure.

    • Hi Deb! It’s so nice to meet you. I am not running NYC. I had knee surgery earlier this year and am still rehabbing and have only just started to run again (a little). I can imagine that it’s quite an adventure to train with an infant son!! I can’t wait to check out your blog and thanks for visiting mine!
