Friday Round-Up: Mattering, Growth, Double Standards and Shout-Outs

Oh Friday! I’m so happy to see you! Are you happy to see Friday too? Are you back into the swing of things post-Labor Day? The weather over the past week here in NYC made an abrupt shift to crisp, cool Fall weather. There have been several mornings when I’ve stepped outside and have been freezing! Which usually also means that I’ve also under-dressed the children but that’s a different story.

Anyhow, I’m going to keep it short and sweet  and get straight to this week’s round-up of posts because I’m tired and I need to catch up on some sleep (PS I’m writing this on Thursday evening). I have to admit. I had a hard time narrowing them down this week so I’m including 7 posts instead of my usual 5.

Yoga poses to counter the effects of the changing seasons
Since we are transitioning from summer to fall, let’s start with this post. This is actually a guest post on She Rocks Fitness from Lauren Morse. Lauren presents her favorite simple and effective yoga poses to combat season changing blues.

The Importance of Skin Cancer Screenings
Here, Lindsay from the Lean Green Bean shares the story of her cousin Kristine who was diagnosed with skin cancer. Skin cancer is 100% treatable if it is caught early on. This is an important reminder to wear sunscreen and to check yourself for moles on a regular basis.

The Double Standard
This is a great post from Angela at Happy Fit Mama about the negativity that women often pit against each other. Are we women our own worst enemies?

When Mom says I’m fat
“Body image is a legacy passed down through generations. Love your body and your kids will love theirs too.” Bex and her daughter Winona take talk about this issue in a pretty open and frank video. It’s incredible to see the relationship between them. I wholeheartedly believe that parents play a huge role in shaping our kids’ health and fitness habits. The way that my parents and aunts spoke about appearance and body image greatly affected how I perceived myself growing up.

Mattering*
It’s hard for me not to include a post from MizFitOnline every week. Seriously, Miz has an amazing way with words and sentiments. This post is no exception. It’s an incredible tribute to a friend but more, it’s an incredible testament to the type of person that Miz is.

Growth: On making a quantum leap
This post from Whitney at Live, Run, Love, Yoga made me so happy. I’ve mentioned before how Whitney’s posts on her experience with yoga teacher training has been really insightful for me. Here, Whitney shares a bit about the journey she’s been on over the past year and how she’s made the quantum leap to pursue her dreams. I’m so happy and excited for her!

We will run (A shout-out to our sponsors)
I want to leave you with this post from Tiffany at Running Hutch. She was part of Nuun Hydration’s Hood to Coast Team this year and put together this video. While it is technically a video thanking the numerous sponsors of Team Nuun, it shows a glimpse into the incredible experience these women had and the amazing race that is Hood to Coast. This makes me want to run this relay all the more.

I have a question for you about these Friday Round-Ups. Are there other types of posts that you would like to see here? I know many of posts are health and fitness related because, frankly, that mostly what a read plus some parenting/life related blogs thrown in. But other topics?  Social media tips? Recipes? Tell me! I want this feature to be useful for you!

  1. I think you covered a lot of bases very well. I think a round-up should be a collection of various posts that cover many different things. You can’t really search out a post that hit home on a week on a specific topic. Keep doing your thing. These are great!

    • That’s true – it’s hard to target a specific topic on any given week because there might not be a good post about it. Thanks for the feedback! It’s super helpful.

  2. Great post! One of the reasons I got into this lifestyle was when my family was telling me I was getting really fat. Didn’t sound good but it was a good motivator. My mom wasn’t really into fitness but my dad was and is still really into it. He’s in his mid-50′s and either runs or swims (or both) every day. And bikes. It took me about 21 years but I finally got into fitness and I think he’s glad now. :P

    • Thanks Katy. Now that I’m a parent, it’s pretty amazing to think how much we influence our kids – and how much kids notice! That’s pretty awesome that your dad runs or swims or does both every day! I hope that I’m doing that well when I’m older!

  3. Thanks for the link love!!! Great posts this week. Some I’ve read and some I need to catch up on. I like your weekly round up the way it is but if you find any useful tips on social media that would be fun! Now go rest! :)
