Friday Round-Up – Expectations

National Aquarium Baltimore

I’m sore! I haven’t worked out much this past week because I haven’t been feeling well since the weekend. Yesterday, I finally started feeling more like myself and was itching for a good workout. I went to the gym, ran a mile and a half (YIPEE!) and did this leg workout. OMG. My legs feel like jell-o right now, but in a good way.

There seems to be a theme among my Friday Round-up picks this week – expectations. Expectations that we have of ourselves, that we have of others, and that others have of us. I’ve been thinking a lot about my own expectations lately and I realized that those expectations often get in the way of my ability to be grateful and to appreciate the #littlethings.

Hooky
I adore Ilene’s writing. She manages to captures many of the complex and conflicting emotions of being a parent. But this post really got to me. I tend to be hard on my kids but Ilene shows how maybe we need to bend the rules a little more.

Great Expectations
In this guest post that Kristen wrote for G*Funk*ified speaks to expectations that we have of ourselves and how sometimes, when even though we meet all those expectations that we have for ourselves, it doesn’t feel quite right. But what can we do about that?

Did you hear? Lady Gaga gained 25 pounds!
Recently, Lady Gaga has been highly criticized in the press because (gasp!), she’s gained 25 pounds since Christmas. Nicole writes a great response to this and our society’s focus on perfection versus being fit and healthy. Lady Gaga has responded to the criticism by posting photos of herself in her underwear and encouraging others to embrace their imperfections. I really admire what she’s doing and think that she’s offering up an inspiring example.

What does the 80/20 really look like?
I think that we all aspire to live a healthy balanced life and for many of us, myself included, that means abiding by the “80/20″ rule i.e. eating healthy and nutritious foods 80% of the time and allowing 20% of your intake to be “treats.” Tina puts together some helpful scenarios to help gauge whether you really are following the 80/20 rule or just think you are.

Behind the Scenes Interview with Kelly Slater
OK, this is from a little more than a week ago but it’s a really interesting interview between Kelly and Sal Masekela about surfing as a profession and being on tour, and the things he cares about. He also talks about the expectations that others have of him as a professional athlete and role model. I know that not as many people are as familiar with how professional surfing works so I wanted to share this piece. Just watch the first minute or two.

What are you grateful for today?

  1. Hi Christine: I shared your post on FB, but could not tag you as you need to reply to my friend request sent awhile ago. Go go go! Good round-up too!

  2. I saw the Gaga stuff you posted on FB the other day, and I appreciated her response. The nerd in me was irritated that apparently she claimed “anorexia and bulimia since I was 15 years”…and the two are mutually exclusive. You can only have one of these disorders at a time. Anorexia typically means starving yourself, but CAN involve purging. It’s anorexia if your body weight gets too low…even if there’s purging. While bulimia means the individual maintains an appropriate (or actually often overweight) body weight. Yes, I realize that if that’s what I care about, I’ve totally missed the point of the blog post. But, I just thought you might want to know these definitions, Christine. Oh. You didn’t? Sorry about that!

    • No, thank you Becky for pointing out the distinction. I think she was probably be overdramatic in how she stated that but I do believe that if she can help shed some awareness, that’s a positive thing.

  3. Great links! I’m grateful for my health and being able to do the things I love.

  8. I love Ilene’s post “Hooky”. I agree with you on the expectation front. I set the barre too high and when I can’t maintain my own standards I crash and burn. I’m constantly taking time to re-evaluate and re-group. I hope you feel better (I hope I didn’t get you sick!).

    • I think that’s where I am right now – standards are too high and I’m trying to do too much and not really doing any of it really well, or at least that’s what it feels like. I feel like there’s a bit of re-evaluating that I need to do and figure out how I want to move forward with stuff. Vague enough for you?? ;-)

    • PS – You didn’t make me sick. My stomach was on and off all weekend I think from something that I ate Friday night. I thought it might be a little food poisoning but I felt fine during the day but not at night. Plus it stuck around for quite a few days. I am finally feeling better thank goodness!

    • That sure is something to be grateful for! I love Scharffen Berger and a bakery crawl with them sounds kind of amazing. Hope it was fun!

  11. Thanks for linking to me. I’ve already read a couple of these, but going to check out the rest. Happy Friday!

  12. Awesome that you ran a mile and a half! I love the round up and can’t wait to get reading! Sorry you have been feeling bad all week. I often find that colds seem to go with travel (I swear my kids always get sick w/in a week of a flight!). Have a great weekend!

    • I was really happy that I ran a mile and a half. I’m trying to take it slow and it amazes me how hard it feels at times. A little reality check that my body needs to adapt and relearn some things.

Traveling always seems to knock me around. I was kind of annoyed that whatever bug I had lingered longer than I wanted it to but I’m feeling better now! Hope you have a great weekend too!!

  13. Thanks for the round up! Cool perspectives ;) . I hope you feel better, and have a great weekend! BTW, cute pic of your lil guys.

    • Thanks Ali! Yes, starting to feel better thankfully. I think that it was the combination of traveling and the weather being all weird here. Hope you have a great weekend!

  14. It’s been said a million times before but the media need to shut the hell up. The way they scrutinize the waist lines of celebrities, then celebrate them when they become rail thin is despicable. What they’ve done to poor Jessica Simpson alone is reprehensible. I hope the day comes when People and Us magazines are relegated to the slag heap.

Okay, now on to the gratitude! Grateful for my wife, for the clients who attend my gyms, and for the fact that, at almost 43, I’m still able to train and compete better than I could have in my 20′s.

    Have a great weekend!

    • I completely agree. It drives me crazy especially since she looks healthy!! She admits that she was underweight before. It’s such a ridiculous high bar to set and it’s a terrible message to send to our kids.

I love what you’re grateful for!! Thank you for sharing. Keep getting after it.

  15. Thanks for all the great shares! I’m so glad you got to run!

  16. Thanks for this Christine! I always had a soft spot for Lady Gaga and now I know why; her response to her weight gain has been awesome!

    • Between Lady Gaga and the hoopla over all the boobs during the red carpet at the Emmys, it’s been crazy body image week! She may be a little crazy but I do admire her for not only standing up and saying something but trying to get others to do the same.

  17. I am grateful for you! And Ilene! And Lady Gaga! So many great things to be grateful for in this post! Glad you got a good work out in! I have been a slacker this week trying to give my pulled quad a rest! Have a great weekend… M.

    • Awww, thanks! I don’t stop and consciously think about the things that I’m grateful for enough. I hope that your quad is feeling better!!

  18. The lady gaga thing is ridiculous. I think she is probably still below the average weight of an american woman, dumb news media!

    • It IS ridiculous. She even said that she was underweight before and she at least looks healthy now! Drives me crazy. I would think that there were more important things to report on!

  19. Thanks so much for including me with such great posts! I haven’t been online again much and I didn’t even know about Lady Gaga. Can’t the media just leave people’s weight alone?! Is there nothing else to talk about? It blows my mind the junk that is considered “news”.
Hope you have a great weekend and can relax a bit! I’m coaching 3 games this weekend and I’m already tired. I’ve gotta rally for my teams though :-)

    • Good luck with your games this weekend! I seriously don’t know how you do it. Hope you get a chance to rest and relax this weekend too. xoxo

  21. I can’t wait for Friday roundup ever! And it killed me that it took me all day to get here! As always, you brought me a few great posts that I missed. And thank you for including HOOKY in the mix. That little Miss F. of mine is my best teacher. She is the one that will teach me to move past my own limitations.

Today, I am grateful for the first week at the new job, my kids, my yoga students, and the love and support of so many. I am blessed. xo

  23. I am greatful for so much! I had to get new tires this weekend and they were AWEFUL, to the point that they hadn’t busted already. I was thankful someone was watching over me with all the driving i’ve done lately. Glad you’re feeling better!

  24. Love the roundup and can’t wait to read up, girl!

(And I’m grateful for getting to go for a run WITH my husband tonight! He had to slow down for me, but who cares! FUN!)
