Do you ever have one of those weeks where you feel like you can never get your head above water? That’s the question I posed on Facebook Wednesday night. Lately, I’ve been feeling like I’m stuck underwater. Optimistically, I think that it’s only been this past week but I know that it’s likely been longer. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the end of the summer and impending start of the school year. Or overall, just being burnt out. I was heartened to hear that I wasn’t alone in feeling this way. Anyhow, despite the craziness (or maybe as a distraction from it?), I came across some lovely blog posts this week.
4 Fitness Grammar Mistakes
In elementary school, I loved learning grammar and creating grammar trees. This post by Kymberly and Alexandra had me giggling about the blatant grammar gaffes that fitness instructors often make in the heat of the moment.
Dear Over-Exercising
Lindsay at Lindsay’s List has always been pretty upfront about her struggles with an eating disorder and body image issues. In this post, Lindsay breaks up over-exercising. It’s a really honest post about the internal battle I’m pretty sure many of us endure. I know that I still battle over-exercising voices in my head all the time.
The Choice I Made
Abby from Run Stronger Every Day shared this incredible post about a difficult and brave decision she recently made. I can’t even do the post justice. I had tears in my eyes. You should just go read it.
10 Things My Alcoholic Parents Taught Me
OK, at first blush this doesn’t look like the most uplifting post out there but Ado over at the Momalog shares the good side and some important lessons that she learned as a result. It’s an extremely positive perspective on a situation in which most people just focus on the negative aspects.
Happy
To end off the week, I have to go back to Miz over at MizFitOnline. Miz always seems to tap into exactly what I’m feeling or what I need to hear and this post was no different. She talks about the many parallels between climbing and life and how both leave her energized and simply happy.
I have some other fun news to share with you. A few weeks ago, I received an invitation to join The Mezamashii Run Project. I had been hearing about this project of Mizuno across many social media circles and blogs and I wanted in.
You see, I first discovered and fell for Mizuno running shoes back in 2005 when I was training for the NYC Triathlon. It was the first time that I was properly fitted for running shoes and OMG the difference was incredible. I remember feeling like I was running on clouds. Since then, I’ve always wanted to go back to Mizunos and now I’m excited to have that chance.
“Mezamashii” means “brilliant” or “eye opening” in Japanese – a word that captures the essence and euphoria of a brilliant run. Through The Mezamashii Project, Mizuno is inviting runners to receive a free pair of shoes and join the quest for a brilliant run.
With my invite, I choose a pair of Mizuno Wave Nirvana 8 Running Shoes - the latest version of the model that I owned back in 2005. It also provides maximum support and cushioning which was important to me as I begin to run again post-knee surgery. While I haven’t yet taken them for a run, I have worn them around for walks and they feel heavenly. I cannot wait to wear them for my first real run post-surgery – destined to be a brilliant run.
The fun part is that a brilliant run may be in the future for one lucky reader. I have one invitation to giveaway which will get you one free pair of Mizuno running shoes (any model except the “Prophecy.”) Here’s how you enter:
- Leave a comment telling me about a brilliant run you’ve had or hope to have.
- For an extra entry, follow me on Twitter (@cyu888) and tweet “I want to join @cyu888 in the #Mezamashii Project. Win a FREE pair of @MizunoRunning shoes for a #brilliantrun. http://www.lovelifesurf.com/2012/08/friday-round-up-and-mezamashii-project-giveaway.html”. Leave a separate comment to let me know what you did.
- For an extra entry, find the photo of my beautiful new Mizunos on Instagram (@cyu888) and leave me a comment that you want to have a #Mezamashii #BrilliantRun. Be sure to leave a comment here that you did this.
- For an extra entry, share a picture on Instagram of a place where you’ve had a brilliant run. Be sure to tag me (@cyu888) and include the hashtag #BrillianRun and #Mezamashii. Be sure to leave a comment here that you did this.
{I received a pair of shoes free of charge from Mizuno USA as part of The Mezamashii Run Project and one invitation which I decided to giveaway. I received no other compensation and all opinions are my own.}

First of all, thank you for including our grammar post in your list. That was very kind of you. Secondly, I’m glad you’re feeling well enough after knee surgery to run again. I am not entering your contest because I love to walk, but hate to run. I had a completely reconstructed knee after a soccer injury so running isn’t fun any more. I hope next week is a head above water, feet on surfboard kind of week!

My most brilliant run was I think my last Half Marathon PR – I felt so great the whole time, really just having to push at the end, but still feeling strong. The pacing was perfect, I was wearing my Mizuno Wave Inspires, and running along with my sister who was running her first half marathon. I want to bottle and recreate that brilliant run in September when I gun for my next HM PR.
A brilliant run for me usually includes running along the ocean, for now I’ll have to make do with the lakes up here in the northland

Sharing it with a couple I love with all of my heart and admire. Ah.

I had a Brilliant Run today. Running in the cool darkness with only the dim glow of street lamps waiting to be told to go to bed. Mile 1 was the warm up and it felt great to stretch. The sidewalks were empty except for Mr. Racoon who stood on hind legs to welcome me to mile 2 and then briskly trotted off into the brush. The sun was stretching her arms as she readied for the day ahead as I made mile 3. By mile 4 the sky was lit and the pale colors promised a clear day. I stretched against the warming wood of High School track concessions stand. Running downtown in my small Oregon mountain town reminded me why I run. I am alive. Brilliantly alive.
