Billabong Rio Pro 2012

Yesterday was the final day of the Billabong Rio Pro – the third of 10 events on the ASP World Tour. The sometimes unpredictable beach break served up pumping barrels on the last day. In the end, John John Florence (16.37) came out on top, beating Joel Parkinson (11.44).

Sadly, I was at physical therapy this morning. I missed watching the final rounds and instead had to rely on my Twitter stream to stay updated. I may have gotten some weird looks from folks as I anxiously clutched my phone and tried to will the thing to update. I may have let out an audible gasp once or twice.

Within the first 90 seconds or so of the final, John John caught about three waves and left Parko comboed with 28 minutes left, meaning that Joel needed two new high scoring waves in order to move into first place. While Joel surfed well throughout the event, he couldn’t seem to find his rhythm in the final. With his second place finish, Joel is now leading the World Title race.

John John Florence is only 19 years old and this is his first ASP Tour win. He joined the tour during the mid-season rotation last year and has been surfing incredibly well over the last six months or so in all kinds of conditions. Even Kelly Slater, who sat out the event due to an ankle injury and has known John John since he was little, was stoked about the win.

Here are video highlights from the final day and you can read a recap here. The next stop on the ASP World Tour is the Volcom Fiji Pro which will be held between June 3-15, 2012.

What do you think? Will John John make a run for the title this year?

  1. haha. audible gasp huh? do you get Fuel TV? I catch a lot of great sport events, like surfing on there. I should see if they have an app? wouldn’t that be cool.

sorry you missed watching it due to PT. but it all be worth it as you’ll be ripping up those waves soon again yourself. ;)

    • Yes, audible gasp. What can I say? I get into watching sports!! I don’t get Fuel TV. My hubs refuses to pay for cable so we only have the basics over here. Most of the surf contests are all streamed live now which is pretty cool. That reminds me that there are also apps to watch the live events on your phone!! Totally forgot about that.

They make it look so easy! Amazing athletes! One day we will surf like that (or not…..)! Have a good one,
    Bron

    • I know, right? It’s incredible – like second nature. You’ve already surfed in a contest! You’ll be competing at that level in no time :-)

  3. I know nothing about surfing but have always been intrigued and impressed. Wow. I couldn’t imagine doing that. How about I come visit you and you can give me a beginner’s lesson? ;)

  4. Wow! I don’t really follow surfing, so this is new and interesting to me. Thanks for the video, too! Amazing to watch them.

  5. surfing is so cool! i tried it in australia and it’s crazy hard so i love watching people that are good at it!

  6. Awesome! This is a sport I know very little about, but am completely fascinated by! Thanks for sharing :)

  7. So this is the SURF part in your title… awesome! I wish I could surf. I tried once… if you could call it trying.

    • Yes! Professional surfer stalker…er, I mean fan! There was an event at Ocean Beach in SF last November that we went to watch while in town visiting family. It is a hard sport but so amazing and fun too.

  8. I wish surfing didn’t terrify me (surfing itself doesnt. mostly the creatures in the ocean do)
looks like SO MUCH FUN. maybe i should check out one of those indoor surfing place majigs. (so technical)

    • I know, I try not to think about the creatures in the ocean. You totally should check out one of the indoor surfing places. There are even surf pools/things on some cruise ships! It’s crazy. I hope you get a chance to try.

  9. I’m amazed by surfers! I always think it’s crazy when we have Nor’easters during the winter and the surfers flock to the beach. It’s when NH gets the best waves but it looks so cold even with wetsuits!

  10. It looks so graceful when they do it…I look gangly and awkward.

  11. oh my gosh, amazing! when we lived in hawaii i always watched the pros. Freaking unreal!
